After writing up the game of the night, I want to keep in mind that there were plenty of contenders for that title. The fact that Houston vs Michigan was the last game to be played really helps my memory of it. So lets dive into the first game played yesterday:
9 Alabama 58 vs Villanova 81
Just like UMBC the night before, Villanova was unconscious on the floor. They couldn’t miss and different guys stepped up to make shots. For the first half, it was Donte DiVinchenzo and for the second half, it was Mikal Bridges. Nova was too powerful against a rather good Alabama team.
7. URI 62 vs 2 Duke 87
Man did I get this one wrong or what? Duke was too strong for a Rhode Island team that was unable to get easy baskets. Duke does the opposite of Rhody in terms of getting easy baskets and they get the win.
13 Buffalo 75 vs 5 Kentucky 95
Give a lot of credit to Buffalo for making it this far and for really testing Kentucky. The size and length of the Wildcats end up being the key difference here over a strong Buffalo team.
11. Loyola-Chicago 63 vs 3 Tennessee 62
This time, it was a lucky bounce off the front of the rim, off the glass and in for the Ramblers. Since they’ve made the Sweet 16 and beaten a strong Tennessee squad, they should be considered as a Cinderella team. By getting the Volunteers best player into foul trouble and letting it rain from deep, Loyola deserved every bit of this victory and whoever plays them next needs to stay on their toes to have a chance because these guys are ready to rock.
8 Seton Hall 79 vs 1 Kansas 83
Let the kids that are new to sports take not of this game. The little dog Seton Hall fought and clawed throughout this game. They were ahead and then behind and to be truthful, this game should not have been close. But with the great play of Angel Delgado and his 20-20 double double, they had a chance to pull it out throughout the entire game. Sadly, Kansas was reliable at the free throw line late and that’s why they are moving on and not Seton Hall. A great game to watch with suspense from the first minute to the last.
5 Ohio State 84 vs 4 Gonzaga 90
The only reason the Buckeyes didn’t win this game is because they started off so far behind. In this game, they got back into a lead, but Gonzaga bullied them in the final minutes and scored enough points to carry the day. Give credit to OSU for a good fight, but it wasn’t enough to pull them through in the end.
6 Florida 66 vs 3 Texas Tech 69
Who knew that one Chris Chiozza getting into foul trouble would have such a profound effect on the Gators. After Chiozza left the court, the Red Raiders got on a run and led by as much as 8 points. Of course you could site the home crowd as a strong influence for Texas Tech but poor shot selection and decision-making from the Gators ended up costing them. Coach Mike White had one timeout to spend and he could have used it with about 17 seconds left to draw up a play. The Gators put up two shots to tie but neither of them fell as they are sent packing to Gainesville thinking what could have been. Good on Texas Tech however as they get to face either Butler or Purdue.
